Register your dot"project".com or not ?

I was wondering who would be the first to register dotcanon.com. Now I know. dotcanon.com was registered last week.

Wether it is a company name, a project or a brand, the «dot» sign seems to become the nomenclature to use when registering a domain name related to a Top Level Domain project.

For example : the TLD project related to the hotel business can be found at www.dothotel.com.

When checking generic keywords : it is possible to «discover» a new TLD project, an old existing web site, a recent page with sponsored links (how surprising?) or...an already cybersquatted domain name.

Now, my concern goes to brands thinking about their personalized TLD : should they register their .com domain name which could inform about their intention to go for their extension or should they not to keep this confidential ?

My advice ?

Chances are high these domains will be cybersquatted at some point anyway. Brands should register, at least, their dot”brand”.com domain name.

The advantages of a .CANON TLD project

Numerous advantages for a company/brand like CANON to go for a .CANON Top Level Domain. Read more about it here (in French).

.KOM domain names ?

As seen before, many new top level domains start to appear everywhere. Many ideas are very good ones. Some are another way to attract the eye.

It si difficult to know if such a .KOM new domain name extension is a real project or not. The ICANN accredited Registrar could submit an application or...it could not.

What to think ?

At the moment I tried to register my guillon.kom, it appeared as "invalid". I wouldn't be surprised it soon possible to pre-order.

As mentioned in the press, the government believes it will cost 342 000 € to set up the registry of the swiss city of Basel and 1.37 million to maintain it yearly.
